Jobs: President Trump has signed an executive order that will double the number of apprenticeships in the U.S. by 4.5 million over the next five years. In politics, sometimes it takes a businessman.
No corny jokes here about “The Apprentice”: Trump’s move makes enormous sense. As we’re reminded almost daily, America is in the midst of a skills crisis, with many young Americans having worthless college degrees and close to six figures in college debt with few prospects to pay them off.
Meanwhile, many well-paid jobs go begging. Today there are a record 6 million jobs unfilled, Labor Department data show, and a good number of those are skilled positions that don’t require a college degree but rather, skills and training. Many young people would have been better served doing a skills- or occupation-based apprenticeship than getting an increasingly worthless college liberal arts degree.
